Researchers found that smokers showed a faster decline in their scores on tests of word memory, relative to non-smokers. Furthermore, people who smoked in their 40s did worse on tests that measure how fast they could pick out certain letters from a page than non-smokers of the same age. The relationship between smoking and memory loss appeared strongest in people who smoked more than 20 cigarettes each day. Why smoking may speed up age-related memory loss is not yet clear. It is suspected that smoking may accelerate memory loss by increasing the risk of high blood pressure, which can damage the brain. However, the relationship between smoking and brain functioning may be slightly more complicated. Smoking could have been causing changes in the brain's blood supply that is not measurable. Alternatively, chemicals in cigarette smoke could also damage the brain directly, Researchers said. Whatever the reasons for why smoking accelerates memory loss, the message from these results should be clear, Richards said.

Be full of beans 
Nutritious and cheap, beans contain a water-soluble fibre called pectin that binds onto cholesterol and shifts it out of the body before it causes trouble. In one study, men who ate one cup of cooked beans a day lowered their cholesterol by 20% in just three weeks. 

Go fish Fish oil supplements contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – dietary fats that take aim directly at high triglycerides and boost HDL (good cholesterol). They’re also potent blood thinners, so they prevent clotting and help to regulate heart rhythm. 

Try tea The tannins found in tea may help lower cholesterol. One study of people with mild high total cholesterol who drank five cups of black tea daily found that they had an average drop of five percent in total cholesterol and 11 percent in LDL. 

Sip psyllium (ispaghula) Fibre-rich psyllium seed husks lower cholesterol. In one study of men with elevated cholesterol, taking a teaspoonful of powdered psyllium in water three times daily lowered total cholesterol levels by an impressive 15 percent in eight weeks. 

Add garlic It contains organosulphur compounds that reduce the stickiness of human blood platelets, and reduce levels of unhealthy fats in the blood. It also appears to inhibit the manufacture of cholesterol in the liver and possibly increase the excretion of total cholesterol.

Patients surviving heart failures are at a significant risk of developing cancer, a new study has found. Heart failure patients are surviving more often with the condition but they are increasingly more likely to be diagnosed with cancer, researchers said, reports UNB. The trend could be attributed to increased surveillance, side effects of treatments, or other causes, researchers said.

“Heart failure patients are not only at an increased risk for developing cancer, but the occurrence of cancer increases mortality in these patients,” said Dr Veronique Roger, director of the Mayo Clinic Centre for the Science of Health Care Delivery and co-author of the study. “These findings underscore the importance of cancer surveillance in the management of heart failure patients,” Roger said. Researchers conducted the study using medical records from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, which links the inpatient and outpatient records from all providers used by the population of Olmsted County, Minnesota. The study included 596 patients with heart failure paired with the same number of similar healthy subjects. The study looked at two 11-year time periods. Patients diagnosed with heart failure between 1979 and 1990 had a 48% increased risk of cancer, while patients diagnosed between 1991 and 2002 had an 86% increased risk. Roger and colleagues suggest several possible causes for the increased risk of cancer in heart failure patients, including side effects of cardiovascular treatments, or stress from illness or other mechanisms associated with the physiology of heart failure such as inflammation. Investigators stress the importance of the findings in the treatment and management of heart failure, concluding patients should be monitored closely for signs of cancer. “These findings also illustrate the importance of multi-morbidity among patients living with chronic diseases and support the concept of providing holistic rather than disease-based care,” researchers said. The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology

Is coffee a cure-all for chronic disease? Previous studies have tied drinking coffee to protective benefits against Parkinson’s disease, stroke, diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Now, new research shows drinking about three cups of coffee each day might stave off Alzheimer’s for older adults experiencing memory declines. The study of 124 older adults with mild cognitive impairment ages 65 to 88 found that caffeine and coffee intake was associated with a reduced risk of developing dementia or a delayed onset of the disease. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) occurs in older people in which they display early signs of dementia such as memory loss that’s beyond normal amounts expected in aging but can still perform daily activities, according to the Mayo Clinic. The condition often progresses into Alzheimer’s within a few years. The research suggested that older adults with mild memory impairment who drink moderate levels of coffee - about 3 cups a day - will not convert to Alzheimer’s disease or at least will experience a substantial delay before converting to Alzheimer’s. Moderate coffee consumption will not completely protect people from Alzheimer’s disease. However, it is believed that moderate coffee consumption can appreciably reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s or delay its onset.

Excessive consumption of cholesterol has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.  All foods from animals contain some cholesterol. This includes meats, such as beef, pork, lamb, chicken and fish. It also includes dairy products, such as milk, cheese and ice cream. Organ meats, such as liver, are especially high in cholesterol. Egg yolks contain cholesterol, too. Some shellfish, such as shrimp, crayfish and lobster, contain more cholesterol than most meals. However, they are also low in saturated fat, so it’s okay to make them part of your healthy diet, as long as you eat them in moderation.
